IBM has officially launched the z17, its latest mainframe computer designed to support the rapidly evolving needs of artificial intelligence in enterprise environments. The new system is equipped with the IBM Telum II processor and is engineered to handle more than 250 AI-specific use cases, ranging from intelligent agents to generative AI tools.

IBM anticipated the central role AI would soon play in business operations and started early on to design a platform that could handle that shift.

Throughout its development, IBM collected over 2,000 hours of feedback from more than 100 enterprise customers. This deep engagement allowed IBM to build a system shaped by real-world use cases and grounded in practical needs. It also means the z17 is not only cutting-edge but also remarkably aligned with the expectations and requirements of modern enterprises.

The resulting architecture reflects a proactive, customer-driven strategy. Instead of reacting to industry trends, IBM helped shape them by delivering a system ready to meet today’s AI infrastructure challenges head-on.

Built with future scalability in mind, the z17 supports 48 IBM Spyre AI accelerator chips at launch. IBM has plans to expand that to 96 chips within the next year. This hardware setup provides the computational headroom necessary for handling increasingly sophisticated multi-modal AI systems and large language models (LLMs).

These AI systems often require high memory throughput and local compute capabilities to function effectively, capabilities that the z17 delivers with precision.
