Urologists Warn Against Sex-Enhancing Herbal Mixtures in Nigeria

Urologists in Nigeria have advised men against the use of sex-enhancing herbal mixtures, cautioning that these products may lead to serious health issues, including reduced sperm production and permanent erectile dysfunction. These mixtures, often marketed as safe, can have dangerous consequences without medical supervision, the experts warned.

Dr. Adebowale Oyebade, a senior urologist at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, explained that these mixtures put men at high risk for *priapism*—a prolonged, painful erection that, if untreated, can cause irreversible erectile damage. “If an erection lasts over four hours without medical intervention, the person risks losing the ability to achieve an erection permanently,” he said, noting that priapism from these herbal mixtures has become increasingly common, leading to what doctors call a "urological emergency."

Consultant urologist Dr. Gabriel Ogah echoed these concerns, citing a rise in priapism cases among young men seeking enhanced sexual performance. According to Dr. Ogah, some young men attempt to improve their performance and prolong erections with these herbal boosters but risk permanent impotence if an erection persists for extended periods. “Once an erection goes beyond 24 hours without treatment, the result is often lifelong impotence,” he stated, emphasizing that these products are neither safe nor effective as advertised.

The doctors also highlighted the negative impact of these mixtures on sperm quality, pointing to chemicals that can reduce both the quality and quantity of sperm. “These supplements are worsening sperm health worldwide,” Dr. Ogah added, stressing that professional medical advice should always precede the use of any performance-enhancing products.
