Maternal health experts have dismissed claims that certain sex positions can help women get pregnant faster, emphasizing there is no scientific evidence to back such assertions. While myths about positions like missionary, doggy style, and spoon being more conducive to conception persist, gynaecologists have confirmed that these claims have no medical foundation.
The idea behind these myths suggests that specific positions, which bring the penis closer to the cervix, might improve the chances of sperm reaching the fallopian tubes. However, experts explain that as long as healthy sperm reaches the vagina and can travel to the cervix, conception is possible regardless of position.
Professor Ernest Orji, an Obstetrics and Gynaecology expert at Obafemi Awolowo University, explained, “There is no sexual position that guarantees faster conception. Once sperm enters the vagina, the woman can conceive, irrespective of position.” He emphasized that sperm can swim freely, and the cervix’s position is only a factor if it is blocked. According to Professor Orji, even in unusual situations, such as sperm being ejaculated outside the vagina, conception can still occur.
Dr. Stanley Egbogu, a Consultant Gynaecologist, echoed this view, affirming that the position during intercourse has no effect on conception chances. He pointed out that difficulties in conception are rarely linked to sexual positioning but rather to the health of the sperm and eggs. He also clarified that sex position is relevant only in specific contexts like sex or gender selection.
The gynaecologists further stressed that no position can prevent pregnancy, nor should it be relied upon as a family planning method. Proper contraception methods, such as condoms, oral contraceptives, and other forms of birth control, remain the most reliable way to prevent pregnancy
