On Monday night, a heart-wrenching incident occurred at Niagara Falls when 33-year-old Chianti Means, a mother of two, reportedly stepped over the guardrail on Luna Island, a popular overlook above the falls. She was accompanied by her two children, 9-year-old Roman Rossman and 5-month-old Mecca Means, all of whom were tragically confirmed dead following the nearly 200-foot fall. Authorities responded to the scene around 9 p.m. and determined that the fatal plunge was “intentional.” However, further details remain under investigation, as noted by the New York State Police.

Chianti, who lived with her children in Niagara Falls, was a domestic violence counselor and a graduate from a Buffalo school. Following her death, friends and community members expressed their shock and grief on social media. “Mental health is no joke,” wrote friend Kayshawna Morgane, while Mich Molina shared, “I am literally sick to my stomach and can’t even deal with the emotions I am feeling.”

Luna Island, situated within the vast Niagara Falls State Park, is known for its stunning yet dangerous overlook. Although millions of visitors pass through the park each year, the island remains somewhat secluded, separated from the rest of the grounds by a river channel with only a chest-high railing securing the overlook.

This tragedy is the latest in a series of similar incidents at the falls. In 2023, another mother jumped into the Niagara Gorge with her son, who survived, though his mother did not. The recent deaths highlight the need for increased awareness and support for mental health issues.
